Who has it, and what they signed for
Most inventories can tell you a laptop exists. Far fewer can tell you who took it, when, what condition it was in, and what that person agreed to at the time.
Every check-out, check-in and transfer is recorded with the person, the role that handled it, the time, and the condition. The holder signs on screen, and the receipt renders in their own language — English or Spanish — not whichever language the technician's screen happens to be set to. What they signed is stored word for word, so editing the wording later cannot change what somebody already agreed to.
Contractors, temporary staff and vendor engineers are handled the same way as employees. They are usually the people holding equipment nobody has a record of.
